RARE 1871-72 OPEN TOP SINGLE ACTION .44 RF REVOLVER, #40XX,
PREDECESSOR OF THE SAA, ONLY 7000 MADE 1872-1873
Description: RARE 1871-72 OPEN TOP SINGLE ACTION .44 RF REVOLVER, #40XX, THE PREDECESSOR OF THE GREAT SINGLE ACTION ARMY, ONLY 7000 MADE 1872-1873. These extremely hard to find Colts were very popular in Mexico where many were shipped. Those that came back to the U.S. are often in much abused condition and usually have barrels shortened. This example retains the 7 1/2" barrel and has matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, trigger guard, barrel and back strap. Further, the cylinder retains about all of the roll marked naval engagement scene. The barrel top has the correct Colt New York, U.S. America barrel address and was probably very lightly cleaned at some point. The frame shows the correct 1871 and 1872 patent dates. It also has the correct ejector housing. Metal surfaces are a smooth gray with some traces of blue in the most protected areas mainly around the trigger guard. the one-piece walnut army size grips are excellent and show just a slight undersize which would lead one to believe they were probably freshened at some point. There are still some spots of dried grease on this revolver indicating that it was probably stored for many years. Very tight mechanically with excellent bore. A seldom seen Colt absent from even the most advanced collections. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: C Model: 1871-72 OPEN TOP Serial Number: 4XXX Barrel Length: 7 1/2 Condition: VG |
