Colt S/A 7-1/2”x45COLT, 46XXX range (1878)
Description: #4955 Colt S/A 7-1/2”x45COLT, 46XXX range (1878), Good+ bore (6-6+). The action is good and tight with all the clicks on the hammer. The metal is very good condition for a Colt S/A that is 142 years old and it has just minor pitting, bumps, and dings. It retains good barrel address, decent frame markings and 70% coverage of an overall deep grey-brown patina with 60% density. The cylinder and straps are slightly more pitted and show more thinning of the patina from probable cleaning of the cylinder and sweaty hand use on the grip straps. VG+ original wood grips. The overall look on this early pre-1880 S/A is considerably above what one usually sees for an old cowboy Colt of this vintage ….but suffice to say this (…and this is a VERY important fact!!)…that since many, if not most Single Actions have been restored, enhanced, and/or “juiced-up” to some degree, one should always take the possibility of some degree of restoration into consideration. This gun has been valued and priced with that possibility in mind because if I were 100% certain that this gun was pure-as-the-driven-snow, it would easily be a $6,000+ gun. This is a really decent early Single Action and a very good opportunity to own a decent major piece of the most popular Wild West frontier cartridge handgun …and one of the fastest value appreciators in the antique gun field.
