1877 Colt Thunderer .41 Caliber Double Action Ordered "Soft"and Engraved by Winchester. Rare revolver w/Ivory Grips
Description: For sale is my Model 1877 Colt Thunderer. The included Colt letter indicates it was ordered soft (unfinished) by Winchester Repeating Arms Co.and shipped to them on May 3rd, 1882. It was one of two guns in that shipment. Most likely, Winchester would have ordered these revolvers and engraved them to match one of their rifles. Sure would be great to find the other revolver and rifle if they still exist. What a set that would make! While Thunderers were notorious for failures, this pistol works perfectly in both single and double action. It has over 75% of its original nickel plating. The engraving is beautiful and covers most of the gun as there are just a few areas which were not done. The left side engraving is slightly lessened because of holster wear. The ivory grips appear to be quite old and possibly were put on when the gun was first retailed. They are intact with no significant damage, showing the typical shrinkage and wear for a revolver this old. They maintain a beautiful yellow/tan swirling patina. A very interesting historical aspect of this gun is the front sight. It is a period correct replacement, using an1880"s silver quarter. The sight blade was positioned to show the eagle's head which is on the reverse of the coin (see picture). Very cool and a great example of gunsmithing back in the day. Very nice barrel address. All serial numbers (36707) match. The screws, loading gate, ejector and spring all look to be original while the cylinder pin is probably a replacement. The barrel (4 1/2 ") shows great rifling all the way back and has slight blackpowder staining. Along with this revolver is the Colt letter (dated 1-19-2022), contemporary wooden case with velvet lining, screwdriver, key and cleaning rod. The Colt Thunderer model was thought to be one of Billy the Kid's preferred pistols to carry. This Thunderer is certainly a unique example of a gun that had a huge role in the Old West. The fact that this revolver has a Winchester connection makes it rare and special. SOLD Antique: Yes |
