Description: LETTERED COLT M1877 THUNDERER .41 Colt DOUBLE ACTION Revolver C&R Shipped to WITTE HARDWARE in STL, MO in 1904 During the World’s Fair Here we present a C&R Colt Model 1877 Thunderer Double Action Revolver, made in 1904 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers. It was quite successful, selling 166,849 from 1877 through 1909. Nonetheless, there was some hesitation to move away from the single action mechanism, which had so proven itself. Famous adopters of the Lightning were William “Billy the Kid” Bonney and John Wesley Hardin, along with “Doc” Holliday. Doc’s weapon of choice early in his western career was an 1851 Colt Navy revolver. Later, Doc carried a nickel-plated .41 caliber Colt Thunderer or the .38 caliber Colt Lightning. The Model 1877 was designed in 1876 by William Mason and was offered in three different calibers with production beginning in January 1877, which led to the three unofficial names. None of the nicknames were ever used by the factory in any reference materials. The 1877 "Thunderer” in .41 caliber was the preferred weapon of Billy the Kid and was his weapon of choice when he was killed by Pat Garret in 1881. The included Factory Letter confirms the serial number, caliber, barrel length, finish, and its June 23, 1904, date of shipment to Witte Hardware Company of Saint Louis, Missouri. What a perfect moment to place an order for a new batch of revolvers — during the 1904 World’s Fair, officially the Louisiana Purchase Exposition! This extraordinary event featured the newest innovations, cultural exhibitions, and stunning architectural achievements from around the globe. It was at this fair that the ice cream cone was first introduced, and the hamburger and hot dog made their debut as popular foods. It’s easy to imagine that Witte Hardware was a busy little shop bustling with activity during this exciting time! The overall condition is good. The original finish has matured to mixed brown and gray patina. The action only functions in double action. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Markings are legible. Numbers match. Both grips show light evidence of handling wear. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 4-1/2 inches. Caliber: .41 Colt Overall condition as seen in photos.
