1910 ADAMS EXPRESS CO. LETTERED COLT POLICE POSITIVE Revolver C&R
RAILROAD & STEAMBOAT COURIER COAST TO COAST
Description: 1910 ADAMS EXPRESS CO. LETTERED COLT POLICE POSITIVE Revolver C&R RAILROAD & STEAMBOAT COURIER COAST TO COAST Here we present a C&R Adams Express Co. Colt Police Positive, made in 1910 by the Colt Manufacturing Company in Hartford, Connecticut. This revolver was marked for Adams at the factory and numbered 99. The accompanying letter confirms the specifications of this piece as well as states that the lot of 90 such revolvers was delivered to J.W. Finkle, the supply agent for the Western Department of Adams Express Company in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1910. A small clip from a 1903 article in the Cincinnati Enquirer confirms J.W. Finkle was promoted during this time to this position. A neat piece! Alvin Adams was orphaned at a young age and became an enterprising businessman who started a new company with little more than “two men, a boy and a wheelbarrow”. The primary business was the carrying of small parcels, bank drafts and other valuables between Boston, Worcester, Norwich, New London and New York City utilizing steamboats and railroads. The business routes expanded rapidly and at the start of the gold rush, a new trans-continental business venture was started. In 1854, the Adams Express Company was formally incorporated on July 1. Adams Express was a combination of Adams & Company plus eight other express companies. The initial public offering was July 1, 1854. Then the Adams Express company was valued at $1 million. Even today, 185 years later, Adams is still doing business. The Colt Police Positive is a small-frame, double-action revolver featuring a six-round cylinder chambered for either .32 or .38 caliber. It was also later offered in .22 caliber cartridges. Designed primarily for sale to federal, state, or local law enforcement agencies, the Police Positive was introduced into the overall firearms market by Colt's Manufacturing Company in 1905. The Colt Police Positive was an improvement of Colt's earlier “New Police” revolver, upgraded with an internal hammer block safety. The Police Positive was very successful venture for Colt. Along with the Colt Official Police, it dominated the law enforcement firearms market in the early 1900s. The Positive was itself incrementally modified in 1908, forming the basis for Colt's Police Positive Special model. The Colt Police Positive Special was a slight improvement of Colt's earlier Police Positive model with the only differences being a slightly lengthened cylinder and elongated and strengthened frame to allow the chambering of the longer, more powerful .32-20 Winchester Center Fire and .38 Special cartridges. The overall condition is fine. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The trademarked grips are solid and in great shape. The numbers match.
