1930's Vintage Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless .38 S&W Revolver
** 5th Model / S&W Factory Re-Nickel **
Description: This is a very handsome 1930's vintage Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless with a 4" inch barrel. This revolver is serial number 250810 which makes it a "5th Model", and it went back to Smith & Wesson for a refinish in May of 1979. The 5th Model was the last variation of the .38 Safety Hammerless made as the popularity of this model died down, with some 41,500 made between 1907 and 1940. This particular gun is in perfect working order and is all-matching except for the grips and the top latch, both of which were likely fit to the gun when it was being refinished at the factory in 1979 as they fit the gun perfectly. The factory refinished nickel plating is mirror-bright and beautiful, rating 98%. The only deductions come from a few tiny little storage/handling marks that are only visible under extremely close inspection. The blue finish on the top latch, ejector star, and triggerguard is like-new, while the case colors on the trigger have faded to a mostly gray patina with only a little color visible on either side of the trigger. All of the factory markings are still crisp and clear on this revolver except for the "Smith & Wesson" stamp on the right side of the barrel which is very light. The S&W factory refinish markings are clear and legible and consist of a star stamped on the rear of the cylinder and "R-N" and the date "5 79" on the left side of the frame under the left grip. The bore in this S&W is very good with sharp, well-defined rifling visible from the forcing cone to the crown of the muzzle. There is some very light scattered pitting in the bore but it is all extremely shallow and very minor, it would have no effect on the accuracy or function of the gun. The 5 chambers of the cylinder are all in excellent condition and free from any pitting or damage. The period factory grips on this Safety Hammerless are in good condition overall and fit the gun very nicely. Outside of a small crack on the left grip's bottom edge they are free from any major damage or wear. The checkering is still crisp and well-defined on both sides, as-are the S&W logos at the top of each grip. This gun was displayed by the previous owner in a shadow box on the wall and as a result you will notice that the right grip is slightly lighter in color than the left due to the exposure to more light. The action on this .38 Safety Hammerless is perfectly in time no matter how fast or slow you pull the trigger. The cylinder lock-up is very good and all of the controls on this Smith are in perfect working order. There is no doubt that this little .38 Safety Hammerless will still function just as well today as the day it left the factory. If you have been looking for a handsome .38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model for your collection this 1930's production gun would be a great choice and an excellent display piece.
