RARE Pre-CIVIL WAR Antique MASSACHUSETTS Revolver
Description: RARE Pre-CIVIL WAR Antique MASSACHUSETTS Revolver 1 of Only 900! COLT PATENT Dispute, UNIQUE Design Here we present an antique Massachusetts Arms Co. Maynard Primed Percussion Pocket Revolver, made circa 1852. In 1847 Colt received a contract for his Colt-Walker Revolver, but lacking any manufacturing capability himself, had to outsource to the Whitney Firearms Co. Once complete, Samuel Colt was able to take over production himself, and while he was at it, he lured several Whitney employees away with him to Hartford. Among those were William Miller and Joshua Stevens. They were secretly working on their own revolver, and when Colt found them out he fired them. They went on to continue their work on the design, first with Edwin Wesson, and then the Massachusetts Arms Co. upon Wesson’s death. The initial design was one in which the hammer also revolved the cylinder. It was immediately attacked by Colt in a patent infringement lawsuit, which Colt won, effectively quashing the success of the revolvers, though they changed the infringing elements and continued to manufacture revolvers. This was why overall production was so low and examples today are both rare and vary mechanically from each other. Massachusetts was forced to unlink the revolution of the cylinder from the cocking of the hammer, which happened to some at the factory. Instead, the company put out a variation on which the cylinder had to be turned by hand. To make up for this inconvenience, they licensed the Maynard tape priming system to add to their revolvers. This allowed there to be one percussion nipple, and with every cock of the hammer a single cap was exposed, and with every pull of the trigger that cap was severed from the rest of the roll and carried down onto the nipple, igniting and firing the gun. The hinged door on the left side of the gun opens to reveal the compartment and a gear that fed the caps. This was a unique system for a revolver that adds a lot interest to this early revolver. Only 900 of this variant and only 2250 made total! This specimen is in very good condition. There is still significant original blue on the barrel latch and barrel with an even gray patina throughout. The back-strap and the cylinder are both florally engraved. All markings are clear and legible. The grips and bore are in very good condition. The trigger/hammer part of the action is functional with the cylinder not currently revolving completely. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 2-1/2 inches in length. Caliber: .28 percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
