LONDON COLT M1851 NAVY Revolver CASED & FACTORY ENGRAVED Percussion Antique
Made in England with English Engraving
Here we present an antique Engraved Colt London Model 1851 Navy Revolver with the London barrel address, made circa 1853 to 1856 in London, England. The U.S. Hartford factory was firmly established, and sales were exceedingly good for Samuel Colt. So, Colt’s thoughts began to drift towards his possible share of the European gun market, and in 1853 he established a factory in London which produced thousands of examples of this model for the British forces in the Crimean War. However, significant sales not forthcoming, the London operation was shuttered in 1856, and the Hartford, Connecticut manufactory continued to be the sole producer, so that any further sales to Europe were simply exported.
This revolver was made during the period of the Crimean War (1853-56), when there was a dispute between Russia and an ultimately victorious alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdon, and Sardinia-Piedmont.
The overall condition is fine. Traces of original finish. Excellent and strong action. The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. Fine, refinished grip, slightly undersized to the grip frame. Sharp engravings. Battle of Campeche cylinder scene is light but present. Numbers match. The case and accessories are in good shape. There is a repaired crack in the lid.
