The High Standard Sentinel, designed by Harry H. Sefried II, is a remarkable firearm worth appreciating. Sefried was a highly creative designer in the firearm industry during the latter half of the 20th century. He played a significant role in the development of various models for High Standard and later served as the chief engineer at Sturm, Ruger & Co. for 20 years. Among his notable achievements was the design of the innovative 10-shot rotary magazine for the 10/22 rifle. The Sentinel, introduced in 1955, initially known as the J. C. Higgins Model 88, was a 9-shot revolver. It was sold by various companies, including Sears Roebuck, Western Auto, and ARMAMEX. Although it may appear unremarkable at first glance, closer inspection reveals its exceptional design features. The frame, made of black anodized cast-aluminum, gives it a seemingly cheap look, but the quality lies in the details. One noticeable feature is the absence of visible screws holding the revolver together, similar to the classic Mauser ‚‚96 Broomhandle. The entire firearm is secured by a single visible hammer pin, which holds the triggerguard, fire control system, and grip to the main frame. Sefried also designed an unconventional cylinder ratchet, replacing the typical ratchet teeth with recessed detents engaged by a pawl. This innovative system, along with the grooved cylinder counterbore that supports the rimfire cases, enhances the precision, durability, and longevity of the revolver. Additionally, a relief groove milled on each chamber prevents damage to the revolver‚‚s hammer nose and provides a channel for escaping gas in case of a rupture. The cylinder crane locking mechanism is another unique aspect of the Sentinel. It consists of a spring-loaded cylindrical shoulder on the ejector rod, securely locking into a recess milled into the frame. Unlocking the cylinder is as simple as pulling forward on the ejector rod and swinging it out. The Sentinel‚‚s fixed sights are highly visible, and the grip designed by Sefried is regarded as one of the most ergonomic in any handgun, accommodating hands of all sizes. The grip‚‚s shape and contours make the Sentinel a naturally accurate firearm. It‚‚s worth getting a feel for a square-butt stocked Sentinel to truly appreciate its design. The Sentinel remained in production for nearly 30 years, offering various models with different features, barrel lengths, finishes, and chambered for either .22 Magnum or .22 Long Rifle. One notable variation introduced in 1957 was the Dura-Tone snubnose model with a 2-3/8-inch barrel, bobbed hammer, rounded grip, and unique finishes. The revolver was also transformed into western-styled models like \"Durango,\" \"Hombre,\" and \"Longhorn.\" In terms of performance, the Sentinel o SOLD Manufacturer: HI-STANDARD Model: R-101 SEFRIED SENTINEL Caliber Info: .22 LONG Condition: Used - Non-Certified Barrels: 6 BARREL |
