Antique MERWIN & HULBERT Single Action Revolver
Description: Antique MERWIN & HULBERT Single Action Revolver By Anitua & Charola of Eibar, Spain Here we present an antique Period Copy of a Merwin & Hulbert Single Action Revolver in .44-40 WCF, made by Anitua & Charola in Eibar, Spain circa the 1880s. The genuine articles were made by Hopkins & Allen by contract. Gun makers in Spain were somewhat notorious for copying all kinds of firearms due to the country’s more liberal patent laws. Anitua & Charola was a company well known for their copies. The Merwin & Hulbert revolvers are considered today to be some of the best made of the late 19th Century and the Wild West, even better to some than similar Colts and Smith & Wessons, though we all know who stood the test of time. These pistols certainly tended to have different, very well-thought features than their competition, and they were extremely well-made. One such feature was the method of ejection. Loading was achieved by placing the hammer at half-cock and sliding down the loading gate to single feed cartridges. If one wanted to unload the gun, they could simply push the latch back on the bottom of the gun, twist the barrel and cylinder assembly and pull forward. Only the empty brass would come out as the space created was shorter than a loaded cartridge, enabling the shooter to top of his gun and keep rounds available. An ingenious method was designed to achieve this that included a machined cut on the cylinder axis pin and a ledge on the breech face that kept the cartridge rims underneath. This system was also advantageous for forcefully removing stuck cartridges, providing lots of mechanical advantage. This one is marked “REWOLBERS SISTEM MERWIN HULBERT PAT. 15 NOV. 81 PAT 19 SET. 85.” on top of the barrel. The left side of the barrel is marked “ANIT & CHAR Manufacturers of Fire Arms”. The overall condition is near fine. The revolver has had a nickel finish applied at some point that is near complete. The markings are legible. The grips are fine. The bore is in great shape with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Merwin & Hulberts have been recognized in recent years for their unique and innovative design, details that obviously did not go unnoticed even in Continental Europe 140 years ago! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7 inches. Caliber: .44-40 WCF Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
