FACTORY PANEL SCENE ENGRAVED Antique MERWIN, HULBERT Medium Frame Revolver
DESIREABLE WILD WEST Double Action w/IVORY GRIPS
Description: FACTORY PANEL SCENE ENGRAVED Antique MERWIN, HULBERT Medium Frame Revolver DESIREABLE WILD WEST Double Action w/IVORY GRIPS Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Factory Panel Scene Engraved Medium Frame Merwin, Hulbert & Company Double Action Revolver with Ivory Grips, made circa the 1880s exclusively by Hopkins & Allen in Norwich, Connecticut. It is estimated that only a few thousand of these were produced. A plus feature of this revolver was the method of ejection. Loading was achieved by placing the hammer at half-cock and sliding down the loading gate to single feed cartridges. If one wanted to unload the gun, they could simply push the latch back on the bottom of the gun, twist the barrel and cylinder assembly and pull forward. Only the empty brass would come out as the space created was shorter than a loaded cartridge, enabling the shooter to top off his gun and keep rounds available. An ingenious method was designed to achieve this that included a machined cut on the cylinder axis pin and a ledge on the breech face that kept the cartridge rims underneath. This system was also advantageous for forcefully removing stuck cartridges, providing lots of mechanical advantage. These revolvers are considered today to be some of the best made of the late 19th Century and the Wild West, even better in some minds than similar Colts and Smith & Wessons. These pistols certainly tended to have different, very well-thought features than their competition, and they were extremely well-made. Interestingly, Bruno Kirby carried a Merwin, Hulbert & Co. revolver during his role in “The Godfather Part II” back in 1974. The overall condition is fine. Original nickel and blue finishes. The bore has dimmed and maintains serviceable rifling. Both grips are in good shape, with light handling wear. Both the right and left grips are slightly undersized. Markings are Legible. Punch dot style engravings. The action fully functions but has a intermittent lock up and timing issue. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.
