Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Scarce & Desirable Merwin Hulbert & Co. Large Frame Double Action Revolver, Fourth Model, Nickel Plated with Folding Hammer, Owned by USMC Commandant Charles Grymes McCawley, .44-40 WCF, mfg. ca. 1880's. This Merwin Hulbert along with a Smith & Wesson .32 pocket were recently purchased from Christopher McCawley, the Great-great-grandson of Charles Grymes McCawley, and were known to have been his personal revolvers according to family tradition. A Jeremiah Johnson Trading letter of provenance will be included detailing the direct family lineage and our acquisition from the family. Born in 1827, Charles Grymes McCawley was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps on March 3rd, 1847 and took part in the Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican War. He commanded several warships in the years leading up to the Civil War and was promoted to Captain in 1861. During the war he commanded Marine units in Charleston Harbor against Confederate occupied Fort Wagner, Gregg, and Sumpter. In 1867 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and on November 1st, 1876 to Colonel Commandant, the highest post in the Marine Corps. In 1883 McCawley chose "Semper Fi" to be the official motto of the United States Marine Corps which has been in use ever since. Commandant McCawley passed away in Philadelphia on October 13th, 1891. The revolver remains in wonderful untouched condition throughout showing approximately 70%+ frosty original Nickel finish. The checkered hard rubber grips fit perfect and are very sharp with little wear and no cracks or chips. Matching serial number "23465" can be observed on the butt, rear face of cylinder, and the rear face of the barrel. The left side of the frame is stamped "CALIBRE 1873 WINCHESTER" with "Pat'd / Jan. 27. 85." marked on the hammer. There is no barrel address or signs of it ever having one. All original screws, folding hammer, trigger, loading gate, and blade front sight. The action is crisp and functions perfectly in both single and double action. Very good bore with clean and sharp rifling front to back. A quick cleaning should really make it shine. This is a fantastic example of a very scarce Merwin & Hulbert Large Frame Double Action with great history. As previously stated a letter will be included detailing the gun's lineage through the family to our acquisition from Christopher McCawley.
