Description: RARE Antique MERWIN & HULBERT .22 Short Version of S&W No. 1 Third Issue Nickel & Rosewood Finish 7-Shot .22! Here we present an antique Merwin & Hulbert Tip-Up .22 Rimfire Revolver manufactured circa the late 1870s in New York with only a few thousand estimated to have been made. Merwin & Hulbert was a firearms dealer that started in 1850s New York, with Joseph Merwin being the main mover. He cycled through several partners and came to hold 50% of the firearms manufacturer Hopkins & Allen. By the 1870s and 80s, Merwin & Hulbert were putting their name on many firearms and actively seeking military contracts, especially in the U.S., apparently none were successful. However, their lack of success was not for lack of a great product. Long overlooked in the collecting world, Merwin & Hulbert pistols are now being compared by collectors to much larger and better known brands like Colt and Smith & Wesson. Some Merwin & Hulbert pistols even have some mechanical improvements over comparable Colts. This little pistol looks almost identical to the Smith & Wesson Model 1 Third Issue and is just as well made as its illustrious doppelganger, which is saying a lot, since S&W pistols stand out as being some of the most well manufactured pistols of the 19th century. In fact, it was so close to the S&W No. 1 that they were sued by Smith & Wesson for patent infringement. Following a successful design infringement lawsuit, Merwin and Hulbert were forced to pay a royalty to Smith and Wesson for each revolver previously sold. Existing stock had the Merwin and Hulbert markings obliterated and were surrendered to Smith and Wesson for disposal. The overall condition is fine. Bright original nickel finish. The action is strong and tight all the way around. The bore is mostly bright with nice rifling. Both of the rosewood grips are firm and retain a vibrant finish. All markings are clear.
