Scarce Afghan & Zulu Wars Era Early Colt Model 1878 DA Revolver
Description: Serial #1227, .450 Boxer, 5 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a few traces of freckling at the muzzle. This is a first-year-of-production revolver that has traces of the original blue finish remaining, mostly on the circular sideplate, and the balance of the metal having turned to a darkly mottled, plum-brown and gray patina. Numerous areas of mild pinprick pitting are present throughout as well. The barrel has a Colt Hartford and Pall Mall London address, and a “(Broad Arrow) / WD" property marking is present on the left side of the frame ahead of an acceptance date that was struck through when the gun was released for commercial sale (3.79). A “CS / D" commercial sale mark is present on left side of the frame just above the cylinder pin lock. The walnut grips are in very good shape with light surface wear, and some flattening of the points on both panels. The mechanism is fully functional both in single and double action, and the lock-up is still tight. This is a handsome, antique London Colt 1878, and was one of 165 Model 1878 Colts purchased through a special British Government contract in May of 1879, for service in the Afghan and Zulu Wars. It would male a fantastic addition to any collection. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1878 Caliber Info: .450 Boxer Gauge Info: .450 Boxer |
