Scarce Belgian Make with Unusual Cylinder Scene

Here we present an antique Colt 1851 Navy Brevete Revolver, made in the 1850s by Liege gun maker N. Gilon. In 1851 Colt’s patent agent in Liege, William E. Newton, made a deal with multiple Belgian gun makers to manufacture licensed copies of the Model 1851 Navy. Ten francs was the settled upon royalty. Nicolas Joseph Gilon was one of these makers. Several other countries saw licensed copies as well, like Austria and Russian, but typically none as good as the Belgium.

This example is one made under license in Belgium (see the Liege stamp on the front of the cylinder) and marked by the maker, N. Gilon. Instead of the typical 1851 cylinder scene of the Texas Navy fighting the Mexican Navy, this specimen reflects a fleeing stag and a pursuing hound with hills and trees in the background. It is a very nice piece, and the grips are stamped with the year “1854”. The bottom of the loading lever is stamped “NG”.
