Fine and Rare Egyptian Contract Remington Model 1875 Army Revolver

Serial #10511, .44 Remington CF, 7 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that only has some traces of dark freckling at the muzzle. This is a very handsome revolver, and was one of the 10,000 ordered ca. 1876 by the Khedive of Egypt as part of the first military cartridge handgun contract ever signed by Remington. The barrel, webbed ejector housing, cylinder, and trigger guard retain about 60-70% of the original blue finish, with the balance faded to mottled plum-brown and gray along the top of the barrel and portions of the cylinder, as well as brighter gray along the high edges and projections. The frame has a mostly gray and plum-brown patina, with original blue still visible on protected areas, and some faint traces of muted color case-hardening can still be seen on the hammer and loading gate. The distinctive Egyptian contract "*R" and "R" inspection stamps are clear and still quite crisp on the barrel, frame, and cylinder respectively. The walnut grips are in very good plus shape, with minor handling marks in the added oil finish on both panels, which are numbered to the gun in faint pencil on the interior. The "J.W.R." inspector cartouche is still crisp and clear on the butt of the left panel. Despite Egypt’s substantial 10,000 gun order, Remington was forced to cancel the purchase during production due to the Egyptian Khedivate defaulting on a previous order for Rolling Block rifles, and was subsequently forced to offer the revolvers that had been produced on the commercial market in order to recoup some of their losses. It is probable that none of them actually made it to Egypt, and they are a very rare and desirable Model 1875 variant as a result.
