1875 U.S. Military Smith & Wesson 1st Model Schofield .45 S&W Single Action Revolver
** Serial Number #71 **
Description:
This is a super-early 1st Model U.S. Military Schofield Revolver in .45 S&W otherwise known as .45 Schofield. Refinished some time ago, likely the 1920's or 30's, this 1st Model Schofield is otherwise original and all-matching except for the frame latch, which is also from a 1st Model. The Smith & Wesson Schofield is one of the most famous revolver designs of all time, used by the U.S. Military as well as lawmen, cowboys, outlaws, Wells Fargo, and ordinary Americans. The 4th U.S. Cavalry famously carried the Schofield in the Geronimo campaign, while the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry "Buffalo Soldiers" carried the Schofield in the American Southwest where it was used in the American Indian Wars, the Lincoln County War, and battles against the Apaches. Schofield's were also issued in quantity to various state militias all over the United States including New York, Michigan, Indiana, Territory of Washington, California, Kansas, and West Virginia, while small numbers were sent to Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Tennessee, Florida, Maine, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Given the widespread use of the Schofield in the U.S. Military and by various State Militias, the use of the Schofield by famous lawmen including Bill Tilghman and Frank McLowery (of O.K. Corral fame), and the highly publicized use of the Schofield by outlaws such as Jesse James and the James gang, the Smith & Wesson Schofield firmly cemented it's place in American history and lore. Even today, the Schofield is second to only the famous Colt Single Action Army in recognition by both gun collectors and everyday Americans. This particular example has resided within one family for three generations, and has not been for sale on the collector's market since the 1930's. As mentioned before, it has been refinished but it was done a VERY long time ago and it was lightly buffed/cleaned at the very most, as all of the sharp edges and lines are still well-defined and crisp. As you can see from the pictures, the refinished blue is handsome and has an attractive patina, showing wear indicative of it's age but no eyesores. The metal itself shows various light dings and handling marks but no major damage or repairs. All of the original markings are still intact, although the "U.S." on the toe of the butt is extremely faint. The S&W factory markings are all still intact and fully legible on either side of the ejector housing, and all of serial numbers are original factory-stamped. The serial number "71" is stamped on the butt of the frame, on the rear face of the cylinder, on the barrel under the latch, on the barrel-mounted latch itself, and on the inside of the right grip (as proper for this model). As mentioned earlier, the frame-mounted section of the latch is numbered to another gun but is the correct 1st Model style. The U.S. inspector's markings of "L.P." are stamped on the rear face of the cylinder and the rear bottom flat of the barrel, just ahead of the hinge, while the frame is stamped with an "L" on the top of the bottom frame strap. The bore in this S&W is in good condition overall, nice and shiny with good rifling throughout but with some light scattered pitting. The 6 chambers of the cylinder are also in good condition, showing only some scattered minor pitting with the balance smooth and shiny. The original grips on this Schofield are in good shape overall and show wear consistent with the rest of the gun. Both grip panels are solid with no cracks or repairs and fit the gun perfectly with just a tiny touch of warping at the butt. The grip escutcheons and screw are both still intact and in good overall condition. The action on this Schofield is in good working order, smooth and in time. The trigger is very light, breaking cleanly with a very light pull. All of the controls are still in perfect working order, including the auto ejection and latch assembly, which locks up tight with ZERO play between the barrel/cylinder assembly and the frame. If you have been looking for an honest original S&W 1st Model Schofield revolver for your collection that is handsome yet still affordable, serial number "71" would be the perfect choice. You would be hard-pressed to find a more historically important cartridge revolver to 19th century American history than this one, it is truly a "centerpiece" addition to any antique firearms collection. As an antique, this can be shipped directly to the buyer's home, no FFL needed.
