1870s Antique REMINGTON New Model POLICE Revolver
Description:
1870s Antique REMINGTON New Model POLICE Revolver
Factory Converted to .38 Rimfire Cartridge!
Here we present an antique Remington New Model Police Revolver, made circa 1865 to 1873 in Ilion, New York. This sidearm, scaled down from the Remington Navy and Belt models, was one of some 18,000 factory alterations from percussion to metallic rimfire cartridge. Designed to compete with the Colt M1862 Police sidearm and the Pocket Navy revolvers, this .38 caliber rimfire, five-shot two-piece cylinder is fitted with a special plate on the front shoulder. This would have been a nice, unobtrusively sized revolver to carry in a holster. With 5 rounds of .38 one could get themselves out of most scrapes. This revolver would have been modified to accept metallic cartridges near the expiration of the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent, which prevented other companies from using the bored through cylinder until 1869.
This one has a bit of light graffiti on the right grip with what appears to be initials and the year “1900”.
The overall condition is fine. The original nickel finish is about 95%. The markings are clear. The grips are in great condition. The bore is near fine, clean with strong rifling. The action is excellent.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 4-5/8 inch octagon.
Caliber: .38 Rimfire
Overall condition as seen in photos.
