Antique REMINGTON “Improved” NEW MODEL POLICE .38 Cal. CONVERSION Revolver Factory Converted to .38 Rimfire Cartridge!
Description: Antique REMINGTON “Improved” NEW MODEL POLICE .38 Cal. CONVERSION Revolver
Factory Converted to .38 Rimfire Cartridge!
Here we present an antique Remington “Improved” New Model Police Cartridge Conversion Revolver, made circa 1865 to 1873 in Ilion, New York. It would have started out life as a .36 caliber percussion revolver prior to conversion. This sidearm, scaled down from the Remington Navy and Belt models, was one of some 18,000 factory alterations from percussion to metallic rimfire cartridge.
Designed to compete with the Colt Model 1862 Police sidearm and the Pocket Navy revolvers, this .38 caliber rimfire, five-shot two-piece cylinder is fitted with a special plate on the front shoulder. This would have been a nice, unobtrusively sized revolver to carry in a holster. With 5 rounds of .38 one could get themselves out of most scrapes. This revolver would have been modified to accept metallic cartridges near the expiration of the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent, which prevented other companies from using the bored through cylinder until 1869.
The overall condition is fine. Original nickel finish. Excellent action. Semi-bright bore with sharp rifling. Both grips are fine with light handling wear. Sharp markings.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.
Caliber: .38 Rimfire
Overall condition as seen in photos.
