Here we present an antique U.S. Remington New Model Army Cartridge Conversion Revolver, likely issued to a Union soldier circa 1863 during the American Civil War before being converted to .44 Centerfire in the early 1870s. The New Model Army was manufactured from 1863 to 1875 with a total production of approximately 132,000 and represented the last of Remington's .44 caliber percussion revolvers. According to the research published in Remington Army & Navy Revolvers 1861-1868 by Donald L. Ware, Remington revolvers through serial #149,000 were accepted prior to the end of the Civil War. Guns below serial #123,000 were accepted prior to the end of 1864.

This revolver was likely converted after 1869, following the end of the Civil War and the expiration of the Rollin-White Patent. The Remington New Model Army was the second most issued handgun on Civil War battlefields, after the Colt 1860 Army. It was the main revolver issued to Union cavalry after the Colt factory fire in 1863. The U.S. government purchased about 110,000 of these at $11 each, and New Jersey bought several thousand for Civil War use. Remington’s highest-production martial pistol, the New Model 1863 Army, featured a strong, solid frame with a groove for a rear sight, unlike Colt’s open-top design. Despite Colt securing more government contracts, many regard the Remington as the superior firearm. Notably, Buffalo Bill Cody used an ivory-handled New Model Army .44 (serial 73,293) from 1863 until 1906, when he gifted it to his ranch foreman with a note stating, “It never failed me.”

The overall condition is good. Traces of original blue are present, but mot finish has matured to a dark brown patina. Strong action, some chambers have late timing. Bright bore with crisp rifling. Makers marks are worn atop the barrel. Both grips contain average wear. A small chip is absent from the left toe. Replaced fron sight. “S” marked trigger guard.
