Civil War Era Remington New Model Army Revolver
Description:
Remington began manufacture of their New Model Army revolver in 1863 and produced approximately 132,000 by the end of its run in 1875. The New Model Army was a .44 caliber blackpowder percussion 6-shot revolver with a 8 inch barrel. Most of the New Model Army production occurred between 1863 and the conclusion of the Civil War in April 1865, during which time the Union Army ordered about 110,000 with some being sold on the civilian market.
The New Model Army revolver shown here was produced near the end of 1864 but bears no Ordinance Department inspector's cartouche. The walnut grips do not appear to have been sanded so it seems this revolver was not one that was purchased by the US military.
The revolver has two serial numbers. The number on the frame, under the left grip, is 101856, and the one on the barrel is 101928. This is a spread of only 72 so could the barrel and frame been mated at the factory? It is impossible to know, but the patina on the frame, barrel, and cylinder all match.
The barrel is stamped "E. Remington & Sons, Illion, New York. U.S.A.". Some of the stamping is faint and partially obscured by some pitting. Other markings include a "W" on the right and a "D" on the left rear of the barrel, an "R" just ahead of the trigger guard, and an "R" and "W" on the cylinder.
There is some pitting on top of the barrel, as noted above, but the rest of the metal is in good condition with wear befitting its age. The brass trigger guard is in good condition with a nice patina. The walnut grips are in good condition with some minor dings but no chips, cracks, or repairs.
The action is tight with a strong hammer and crisp trigger. There is no play in the cylinder. The inside of the chambers are smooth and not pitted and the nipples are in good condition. The loading mechanism functions smoothly. The screws have not been messed with. The rifling is sharp and the bore in good condition, as I tried to show in one picture. Overall, this is a very nice looking and functioning all original Remington New Model Army revolver.
