Description:
Rare GREAT CHICAGO FIRE CITIZENS ASSOCIATION Antique Remington Martial .46

REMINGTON IMPROVED .46 RF New Model Army Revolver

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Remington “Improved” New Model Army Cartridge Conversion Revolver. The New Model Army was manufactured from 1863 to 1875 and converted during the same era with a total production of approximately 132,000 and represented the last of Remington's .44 caliber percussion revolvers. The Remington New Model Army represents the second-most number of issued handguns found on Civil War battlefields, second only to the Colt 1860 Army.

In 1868, Remington began converting percussion revolvers to utilize metallic cartridges. To bypass the Rollin White patent, they partnered with Benjamin Kittredge, who paid Smith & Wesson $1 for each converted revolver. These “Improved” New Model conversions are among the earliest full-sized metallic cartridge revolvers and serve as important links bridging the percussion era and the metallic cartridge era.

The revolver bears “C.A. 141” stamped on the right side of the frame ahead of the cylinder, indicating it is reportedly one of a very limited number marked for the “Citizens Association” of Chicago. This organization was established in 1874 after the second Chicago fire to implement reforms demanded by insurance underwriters for fire safety in the city. These markings are further explained in the second quarter of the 2017 issue of the Remington Collectors Journal. The revolver features matching full and partial serial numbers, along with the number “G30” marked on the bottom of the barrel, inside the trigger guard, to the left of the grip frame, and faintly handwritten on the interiors of both grip panels.

The overall condition is exceptionally fine. Excellent action. Original blue is preserved. Vivid case colored hammer. The grips are solid, showing use. The grip frame has been made to accommodate a detachable stock. Numbers mach.
