Remington New Model Police embellished revolver
Description: This truly extraordinary New Model Police unaltered 36 caliber, 5 shot embellished percussion revolver, the revolver is nickel with silver plate on trigger guard an on top of sight barrel and portion of the 6 1/2" octagon barrel. The revolver has only 1 patent date on barrel which dates it early 1865. The revolver was embellished for presentation, display, or one of the few donated to Serenity Fair to be ed off for the wounded soldiers and their families. The pistols were removed from production prior to being serial numbered. The Special Order Department serial number "3366" is marked on the left side of the grip frame near the toe and on the backside of the trigger guard and on the underside of the barrel. 33 is the 1st 2 numbers of several embellished new models to include army, and navy models. Perhaps the engravor number or level of embellishment options code.may be the engraver number or designated the embellishment features of the revolver. A couple of examples of the 33XX can be found in " The Guns of Remington: Historic Arms Spanning to Centuries:, by Madaus and Goodwin, including matching or similar cylinder engraved and etched revolvers. J.L.M is professionally engraved in script on inside on handle. The inside of the right grip has only the 33 serial number stamped in the wood. Howard Madaus estimated that less than 100 in-house embellished New Models were made. Matching or similar cylinder etching is shown on multiple models of Remington revolvers. In some examples, the shooter wears a cape/cloak, as does this one. The engraving, etching on cylinder and lever, silver plating and up grade to exotic wood was available to choose from, this one has all options available, etching being the rarest. It features a pinched blade front sight, standard barrel markings with engraved borders, traditional punch dot backed scroll engraving on the rear of the barrel and most of the frame as well as the trigger guard bow, some geometric pattern accents and borders on the barrel and back strap, gadroon patterns along the top strap sight groove and lower front sides of the frame, etched scrollwork on the loading lever, and a etched scene of two men on horseback among trees and one of the men firing a handgun at the other. The finish is very good condition especially the engraving. The pictures show the silver plating, on the barrel, trigger guard back straps playing is worn from normal handling use. The mahogany case contains a double sided powder flask with a pair of pheasants and a dog on each side and is also silver plated, a box of paper percussion cartridges, 2 cap rounds a 36 ball duel brass mold and a cap remover tool with the hole punch inside of tool. The mahogany presentation box includes the skeleton key. The blue velvet liner is slightly damage as see in pictures. Excellent overall with 85% of the original silver plating showing and natural aged patina, The revolver is mechanically excellent. Bore is in very good shape. The case and accessories are in good condition with mostly storage wear, This is a gorgeous and incredibly scarce example of the Remington Special Order Department's work complete with a case and accessories. These Special Order Department guns are rarely available and are missing from many of the most advanced Remington collections. Chances to acquire one of these pieces in this condition and special order features is most likely seldom offered in a lifetime. I have researched and found 4 of these, 2 with only the revolver, that has sold, 2009, 2013, 2018 and 2022. In 2009 it sold for 7700.00 and in 2022 one was ed with a very respectable company for 23000.00 I will consider offers.
