VERY RARE Antique REMINGTON M1875/1888 .44 “New Model Pocket Army” REVOLVER
Description: VERY RARE Antique REMINGTON M1875/1888 .44 “New Model Pocket Army” REVOLVER 1 of <1000 TRANSITIONAL SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVERS Here we present a rare antique Remington Model 1875/1888 Single Action Army Transitional Revolver, also known as the “New Model Pocket Army”, made in Ilion, New York circa 1888-89 with less than 1000 of these revolvers being manufactured. In 1888 Remington had entered receivership due to significant business setbacks and was purchased by Winchester and Hartley (of Hartley & Graham fame), who both owned 50% of the company. Having assumed control of Remington Arms Company in 1888, it is likely that these revolvers were specifically made for Hartley & Graham with parts on hand at the factory. Identical in appearance to the Model 1890, the revolver has a 5-3/4 inch round barrel marked “E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y. U.S.A.” on the top. This very scarce, limited production Remington Model 1888 was a direct competitor to the Colt Single Action Army and is one of the most sought after Remington handguns. Like the 1875 model, the 1888 was suitably made for metallic cartridges, but only issued in .44-40 caliber. Ordinary citizens and Old West lawmen alike recognized the sturdy quality of the new Remington revolvers. After the production of the very few Model 1888 transition revolvers, Remington began production of the Model 1890 Single Action Army revolver. The Model 1890 was manufactured between 1891 to 1896 in very small numbers. Aside from this transitional Model 1888, it is one of the most sought after of all of the Remington handguns. On the M1890, the standard barrel length was 7-1/2 inches or 5 3/4 inches. Of the 2,020 produced, a handful of Remington 1890s saw service as side arms by Indian police on Western reservations. Changes that were made to the Model 1890 were an attempt to make it more similar to the competing Colt Single Action Army pistols of the era. The Model 1890 was an opportunity for Winchester to put its own competitor to the Colt Single Action Army on the market, without technically violating the long standing unwritten agreement between Colt and Winchester to “stay out of each other’s markets”. In other words, Colt would concentrate on making handguns and try not to interfere too much in the rifle market and Winchester would stay out of the revolver market. The Model 1890 was a great way to compete directly with the Single Action Army by Colt, without starting a war between the two companies. The choice of the caliber was also a logical way for Winchester to emphasize the favorite pistol caliber (44-40 WCF) chambering of its most popular rifle line. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. Grips are very worn but remain solid. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 5-3/4 inches. Caliber: .44-40 Winchester Center Fire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
