Here we present a C&R Lettered Smith & Wesson “Victory” Model .38 Special Revolver, made in November of 1943 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The included factory letter confirms the barrel length, finish, grips, and shipment to Ohio Edison Co. in Akron, Ohio on November 2, 1943. Ohio Edison was an electric utility founded in 1930 during the Great Depression.
During wartime in the United States, every company and business involved in the war effort or in the stability of the country was aware of the possibility of attack from the enemy within, especially targeting infrastructure. As critical infrastructure, Ohio Edison was placed under supervision of the War Production Board, which would have required armed security, which is where this revolver came in. This “Victory” model revolver has been martially inspected as marked with the “flaming bomb” on the butt.

The Victory model was so named for the "V" prefix which was placed before the serial number and represented "Victory" against the Axis powers in World War II. Serial numbers for the .38 Special Victory model began at about V1 in early 1942 and ran until VS811119 with a date of late August of 1945 (end of production). Crane and crane recess are also serial numbered to each other, but this is a different number than the revolvers serial number, as is correct for Victory model revolvers. The Victory Revolver was produced throughout most of World War II and is a variation of the Military & Police Model of 1905. The Victory model revolvers participated in various roles from guard duty to riding in a shoulder holster with fighter and bomber pilots. To this day the Victory model is a very enjoyable shooting collectible, mainly due to its inexpensive cost, light recoil, and good accuracy. 

The overall condition is fine. Original Parkerized finish with case colors on the hammer and trigger. Excellent, smooth double action and crisp single action. Bright bore with sharp rifling. The grips are smooth and solid. The numbers match. Markings are clear. A fantastic and very clean example of how military arms were used domestically in the US during World War II!
