Antique First Model Smith & Wesson .44 Russian Double Action Revolver. Scarce 4" Barrel. Like New Mechanics. Minty Bright Bore...
Description:
SOLD...Antique Smith & Wesson first model double action revolver. Caliber is the .44 Russian. S/N 27904 and all matching on the frame, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. No numbers on the grips. This is an antique made before 1898 but I will have to do some research on exact year MFG. The S/N range on this model is 1 through 54668 and made from 1881 to 1913. Even if made after 1898 these are all considered antique because all the frames were made before 1898. This one has the harder to find short 4” barrel and all is correct. Very sought after barrel length in this model. When I bought this gun through an I thought it had been wiped with cold blue but when I got it I soon found out that some bozo painted it with some kind of spay can gun finish ??? After a couple hours of removing most of this stuff I found it is a pretty nice looking gun. There are still traces of original nickel finish scattered here and there. All the markings are excellent and nothing was buffed out before the “painting”... The edges are still sharp and nothing has been filed on of messed with. The action is excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun. It locks up like new in both single and double action. NO cylinder play and no front to rear movement or cylinder wobble. Barrel to frame fit at the latch and the hinge are tight as new also. This gun works like the day it was made. The bore and chambers are excellent and minty.. Bright and shiny with NO roughness or pitting what so ever. The grips are a bit undersized so don't know if they are from a different gun or not but not so bad that they are detracting from the gun. Just a bit undersized on the front and rear straps but fit perfect on the bottom. The grips are perfect with NO cracks or chips and still fit very well. The screw heads are still nice and sharp not burred up from tinkering and all are serviceable. Original untouched front sight never filed on or messed with. Extractor works perfectly of course. Both the first notch and full cock notch on hammer and sear holds perfectly. Not a bad gun at all and hard to find these with perfect bores and chambers and also factory perfect mechanics. Most of these double actions need action work and are very hard to repair. This one is ready to go with no issues. It would make a dandy shooter with proper black powder loads of course.. I have this one priced with this in mind and much better than the beat up and rattly gun usually found. It should age back nicely to a more even patina. I did the best I could to make it look more pleasing. If you don't like it the way it is, spray bomb paint is $5 a can !!!! Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $20 insured shipping on this one. Here is a reasonable old frontier revolver.
