Antique Smith & Wesson 38 SA 2nd Model. Excellent Mechanics & Bore. With Factory Letter.
Description: SOLD..Antique Smith & Wesson 2nd model 38 SA. Here is a nice little Smith & Wesson SA 2nd model. It has the standard 3 1/4" barrel. .38 S&W Black Powder. S/N 28295 and ALL matching of course.. Gun comes with a Smith & Wesson Factory Letter. Shipped to Carr & Hobson Co. Cliff Springs NY. in 1878.. This is unusual as most all of these were shipped to Robinsons as they were the number one dealer for S&W's.. All made from 1877 to 1891 with 108, 255 being produced. The barrel has about 75% original nickel finish. The cylinder has about 90% original finish... Unusual for the cylinder to retain this much finish as is usually the first part of the gun to lose finish. The frame has some flaking to the finish as you can see and it has about 50% or so including the front and rear grip straps. The balance were the finish has flaked of is a smooth brown patina. No pitting to speak of. The hammer has good traces of case colors. The barrel latch has some blue remaining. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun. NO play or wobbles anywere. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the latch and the hinge. The markings are excellent as well. The bore is excellent and bright... Very strong and sharp rifling.. The chambers are the same with no pitting or roughness. The grips are very nice and a perfect factory fit. Still shows most all of the fine checkering. Does show one small surface crack on the bottom right grip as you can see in the close up photo with the S/N. It is solid and tight. No repairs or other cracks or issues. The screws are very good and not all burred up and all are still very serviceable. Not a bad little gun at all and a mid way collectible and a very nice shooter with proper black powder loads of course. Priced reasonable for your collection with the factory letter !!!! $18 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos.
