Smith and Wesson .38 S&W DA "3rd Model" Mfg.1884
Description: The .38 DA was Smith and Wesson's very first .38 double action revolver. Smith and wesson began manufacturing of this model in 1880 and continued to produce it until the 1920's with small changes along the way. These changes make up model numbers 1 thru 5 until finally the last variation was named the "Perfected Model". This example is a "3rd Model". The 3rd model was made between 1884 to 1895 and starts with serial number 119,001 and ends at 322,700. The 3rd Model did away with the double set of cylinder stops and also the freeing groove. The flutes were also made longer on this model than the previous two because of the aforementioned deletions. This revolver is serial number 119,767 and was made in 1884 at the very beginning of the 3rd Model. This gun was entirely nickel plated with the exception of the hammer, trigger and trigger guard, and a couple of other small parts like the cylinder latch. This revolver retains a conservative 85% of the original nickel finish and some of the original factory bluing and case coloring in the protected areas. Mechanically this revolver is in excellent shape. The action works correctly and is nice and tight. It locks up great and the trigger breaks crisply in single action, and is smooth when pulled double action. The matching serial numbered cylinder is in great shape with the bores in excellent condition. The ejector rod works properly and is in time. The cylinder latch is nice and tight and has proper spring tension. The original black hard rubber grips are nice and tight and have no cracks or repairs. The grips do show wear and the right side has a gouge towards the bottom, but they are solid and fit perfectly. The bore is mostly bright with just a very little minor pitting but has strong rifling and does not appear to have been shot much over the last 100+ years. This antique Smith and Wesson is a great example of one of Smith's most popular models and remains both beautiful to look at and entirely functional. It is a testament to the quality revolvers that Smith and Wesson made during this time that this gun could be carried today as confidently as the day it left the factory in 1884!
