SMITH & WESSON Commercial M1917 .45 Double Action “*” Reworked Revolver C&R With AMERICAN EAGLE Proof on Underside of Barrel

Description:
SMITH & WESSON Commercial M1917 .45 Double Action “*” Reworked Revolver C&R

With AMERICAN EAGLE Proof on Underside of Barrel

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Smith & Wesson Commercial Model 1917 Double Action Revolver, made circa 1919 to 1949 in Springfield, Massachusetts. World War I was on the horizon and it seemed certain that the United States would become involved. Smith & Wesson people began to work with Springfield Armory to develop a hand ejector model that would fire .45-caliber Government cartridge. This was accomplished in 1916 by the use of half-moon clips. New revolver is quite similar to .44 Hand Ejector in appearance. It has a 5.5” barrel, blued finish with smooth walnut grips and a lanyard ring on the butt. Designation “U.S.Army Model 1917” is stamped on the butt. After the war broke out, the government was not satisfied with S&W's production and actually took control of the company for the duration of the war. This was the first time that the company was not controlled by a Wesson. Factory records indicate that there were 163,476 Model 1917s manufactured between 1917 and 1919, the World War I years. After the war, sale of these revolvers continued on a commercial and contract basis until 1949, when this model was finally dropped from the S&W product line.

Colt had been producing a revolver for the U.S. Army called the M1909, a version of their heavy-frame .45-caliber New Service revolver in .45 Long Colt to supplement and replace a range of 1890s-era .38 caliber Colt and Smith & Wesson revolvers that had demonstrated inadequate stopping power during the Philippine–American War. The Colt M1917 Revolver was essentially the same as the M1909 with a cylinder cut to take the .45 ACP cartridge and the half-moon clips to hold the rimless cartridges in position. .45 Auto Rim was also developed to be fired in these without the use of the moon clips.

This example has matching numbers on the butt, cylinder, and barrel with an American “Eagle” proof on the underside of the barrel. The butt is marked with the factory rework star marking and “2.25.30” marked under the grips.

The overall condition is very good. This example has been refinished and has a factory re-work star on the butt. Excellent action. Shiny, bright bore with strong rifling. Markings are sharp. Solid grips, contain average and expected handling wear. Numbers on the cylinder do not match.
