Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 6-inch 44 Magnum, 3 TT’s, Pristine Condition
Description: This is one of Smith & Wesson’s most famous and widely known models. The 29 was intended to allow the shooter to have a revolver possessing better knockdown power than any 357 Magnum chambered revolver. This is a “Dash-2” variation. This was the last variation of the 29 to have the traditional S&W pinned barrel. Other features included are: an 6-inch 1/2-lug barrel, square butt frame, .500-inch serrated target trigger, .500-inch target hammer, ramp front sight with red insert, and white outline on the rear sight blade. The serrated backstrap has 10 grooves. The grips are traditional Goncalo Alves checkered target grips. Smith & Wesson refers to these as “target stocks.” The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured in 1980. The 29’s popularity increased drastically in 1971 with the release of the film Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood. Although the 29 he normally carried had the 6.5” barrel, some scenes as well as posters depicted him with the 8.375” barrel. Indeed, of the two 29 revolvers used in the film, one was a 6.5” and the other an 8.375”. For the actual shooting sequences however, a Model 25 in 45 Colt was used as the 5-in-1 blanks were plentiful while 44 Mag blanks were yet not available. In the real world, the Model 29 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement, although never on an “as issue” basis. This example is in excellent condition with little to no wear. The barrel and frame exhibit virtually no finish wear, with the cylinder having the slimmest turn ring on the cylinder and a small amount of wear over one of the chambers at the very front of the cylinder (see pictures). The grips are in near pristine shape. The hammer has the slightest loss of the case hardening on the right side, but the trigger retains its finish well. There are barely any powder burns at the front of the cylinder. The bore is in excellent condition and looks like it left the factory yesterday. The 6” barrel would make the 29 suitable for use as a target or just a plinking gun. One very nice feature of the 29 is that like any 44 Magnum revolver, it will also safely fire the .44 S&W Special and .44 S&W Russian cartridges in addition to the .44 Magnum. This allows the owner to practice with the gun frequently and not have to worry about hurting their wrist. Overall, given the condition, this 29-2 would make an excellent addition to any S&W collection. SOLD Handgun Caliber: .44 Special, .44 S&W Russian, .44 Remington Magnum Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: Model 29-2 Serial Number: N769254 Bore: Rifled Chambers: 6 Ejectors: Manual, simultaneous 6-round ejection Condition: Excellent Barrel Type: Ribbed Action: Double/Single Action Triggers: .500” (12.7mm) serrated target trigger Stock: Goncalo Alves checkered target stocks with extractor relief cut Finish: Blued Sights: Micrometer-click rear sight, ramp front sight; Sight Radius 7.9375 inches (201.61 mm) Manufacture Date: 1980 |
