1955 First Year Production Smith & Wesson Combat Magnum Pre-Model 19 .357 Magnum Revolver ** Beautiful Pre-19 S&W **

Description:
The Smith & Wesson Combat Magnum was introduced in 1955 and manufactured until 1957, when it was re-named the Model 19 in 1958.  This double-action revolver was built on the 4-screw square-butt K frame with a slightly larger yoke than the standard K frame to handle the magnum chambering.  It was offered in a gloss blue or nickel finish with a 4" inch pinned barrel only with a Baughman Quick Draw front sight and adjustable micrometer click rear sight. The Combat Magnum also featured a 6-shot fluted and counter-bored cylinder with a nominal length of 1.67" inches.  The S&W Combat Magnum was a great success and proved to be a superb revolver that extremely well-made, reliable, and very accurate.  The Combat Magnum set the stage for the S&W Model 19 to be one of the firm's best guns and remained in production as the Model 19 until 1999.  This particular example was made in the first year of production, 1955.  It is in excellent condition overall and appears to have lived a very easy life.  The original gloss blue factory finish is still beautiful and rates 96% +/-, with minor finish wear showing at the muzzle, on the ejector rod, and some of the high edges.  There is one small spot of previous surface rust on the cylinder and a faint drag line as well, shown in picture 7.  As you can see from the pictures, these small deductions do not detract much at all from the very clean look of this Smith.  The original case coloring on the trigger and hammer is superb on this Combat Magnum.  Both the trigger and hammer rate 98% plus.  The bore in this S&W is excellent with nice sharp rifling throughout and no visible imperfections.  The cylinder bores are equally as clean and bright.  The original grips on this gun were replaced at some point in the last 64 years with S&W factory Target-style Goncolo Alves grips.  While they are not original to this gun they look great and are in excellent condition.  Everything else on this gun is 100% original and the frame, barrel, and cylinder are all serial numbered matching.  This Combat Magnum has an exceptionally smooth action that is perfectly "in time" and locks up tight.  It really has to be felt to be truly appreciated.  These S&W hand-built revolvers made in the 50's have some of the slickest actions that Smith & Wesson ever produced.  The trigger is also superb in this revolver whether operated in single or double action, breaking without any slop or excessive travel.  All of the controls on this gun are in perfect working order and we have no doubt given the excellent condition of this gun inside and out that it will shoot just as well today as it did in 1955.  Whether you have been looking for one of these pre-Model 19's for your collection, or just looking for a top-quality .357 Magnum revolver to shoot, this first year production 1955 Combat Magnum would be an excellent choice.
