This Smith & Wesson Model 29 is the long-barreled heavyweight of the classic .44 Magnum family, pairing the massive N-frame with an imposing 8 3/8-inch barrel. Serial number AYM7658 falls within reported 1988 production, placing it at the introduction of the strengthened Model 29-4 endurance-package configuration. The long sight radius, full-size target controls, and unmistakable deep-blue finish give this revolver serious presence. It was built for hunters, long-range handgun shooters, and anyone who appreciates the authority of a traditional big-bore Smith.

The 8 3/8-inch barrel adds useful weight ahead of the frame and gives the revolver a steadier hold than the shorter Model 29 configurations. That additional mass helps moderate muzzle rise while allowing the .44 Magnum cartridge to make better use of its powder charge. The fully adjustable rear sight and red-ramp front sight provide a clean, highly visible sight picture for deliberate shooting. It is a configuration with real reach, and it remains one of the most recognizable long-range revolvers ever produced.

Smith & Wesson equipped this revolver with a wide target hammer and serrated target trigger, giving the shooter excellent control in both single-action and double-action operation. The square-butt N-frame provides plenty of gripping surface and distributes recoil across the hand better than smaller-frame revolvers. Its carved hardwood target stocks feature decorative scrollwork, checkering, and inset Smith & Wesson medallions, giving this example a distinctive presentation-grade appearance. These grips appear to be later replacements rather than the standard factory target stocks normally associated with 1988 production.

Chambered for .44 Remington Magnum, the Model 29 can also fire the shorter and softer-shooting .44 Special cartridge. Full-power Magnum ammunition gives the revolver legitimate hunting capability, while .44 Special loads make it far more comfortable for extended range sessions. The solid carbon-steel construction, six-shot fluted cylinder, and shrouded ejector rod reflect the traditional Smith & Wesson magnum formula. The 1988 endurance-package updates were intended to improve durability under sustained use with heavy ammunition.

No discussion of the Model 29 is complete without the Dirty Harry franchise, which turned Smith & Wesson’s .44 Magnum into a worldwide cultural icon. Clint Eastwood’s portrayal of Inspector Harry Callahan made the big N-frame revolver almost as famous as the character carrying it, and demand for Model 29s surged after the original 1971 film. Although the best-known screen configuration used a shorter barrel, this 8 3/8-inch version was used in promotional material, and delivers even more visual drama and emphasizes the platform’s sporting and hunting credentials. For many collectors, the Dirty Harry connection remains one of the strongest value and nostalgia drivers attached to any postwar American revolver.
