It was made for the California Highway Patrol and later for the Los Angeles Police Department in 1983. CHP was originally stamped on the left of the frame above the Triggerguard and overstamped "OHP" when sold. lt has a S&W trademark on the sideplate, the cylinder face is stamped with "V" to indicate a 38 Special cylinder. It was produced when the California Highway Patrol was not authorized to carry
357 Magnum sidearms. It is identical in appearance to a Model 66 except the barrel is stamped ".38 Special" and the cylinder is slightly shorter.
