Here Ancestry Guns presents an Exceptionally Nice Antique Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 “Old Army” Revolver, made circa the late 1860s in Springfield, Massachusetts. Smith & Wesson bought the rights to the Rollin White patent for bored-through cylinders, which changed how revolving firearms were developed forever. In 1857, they introduced the Number 1, a small 7-shot .22 rimfire pocket pistol that was quite popular. Recognizing the potential for larger, belt-holster-sized revolvers, they quickly developed the Number 2 “Army” Revolver, a 6-shot .32 caliber, just two months after the Civil War started. They continued to make good use of their patent, and these revolvers remained popular with both civilians and frontiersmen. Over the years, from 1861 to 1874, about 77,200 of these revolvers were produced. Those with serial numbers under 35,731 are considered Civil War guns, as they were made before May 1, 1865.
The “Old Army” revolver was likely bought privately by soldiers or given as a gift during the Civil War. This example, made after 1865, comes in a deluxe rosewood veneered case with a brass plaque, making it a fine keepsake. Many such revolvers were carried on the frontier, but few are in such excellent condition. It features the standard one-line barrel address, matching serial numbers on the butt, grips, and cylinder, as well as a matching assembly number “9xx.” The revolver has a German silver blade front sight, notch rear sight, and smooth rosewood grips. The hardwood case includes a blank brass plaque, an interior fitted for .32-100 Short cartridges, a key, and an oil bottle.

Despite not being a household name, this revolver from S&W has found its way into popular culture and demands appreciation from younger history lovers. “Resident Evil 4” was first released in 2005 for the Nintendo GameCube. Since then, you’d be hard pressed to find a console that it has not been remade or ported over to. The S&W No. 2 makes a showing in almost every version on the iconic Merchant’s shooting range door!

The overall condition is exceptionally fine. Original blue finish is preserved. Excellent, tight action all the way around. The shiny bright bore maintains crisp rifling. Sharp markings. The grips are excellent and retain the original varnish. Fine case and accessories. The cartridge box is empty, but original.
