1924 DENVER SHIPPED Smith &Wesson .38 Revolver
Description:
1924 DENVER SHIPPED Smith &Wesson .38 Revolver
LETTERED Roaring Twenties Safety Hammerless
Here we present an excellent Smith & Wesson 5th Model .38 Safety Hammerless Revolver, shipped from the manufacturer in Springfield, Massachusetts on September 2, 1924 to Tritch Hardware Co. in Denver, Colorado. Denver might seem a remote place in the 1920s, but Denver was a growing city and Colorado was one of 26 states that enacted Prohibition in 1916 before the federal government did so nationally in 1920. Of course, this did not stop people from drinking and it certainly did not stopanized crime from places like Chicago from seizing business opportunities. Men like Diamond Jack Alterie operated speakeasies in Glenwood Springs and hosted the likes of Al Capone.
This revolver was also known as the “New Departure” or the “Lemon Squeezer”, the latter due to the safety bar in the backstrap. This little revolver holds 5 shots of .38 Smith & Wesson. It was designed to meet the defensive needs of citizens and law enforcement in the late 19th Century. This is a top break design with an automatic ejector, hammerless design and grip safety. These features made it great for pocket carry.
The left side of the barrel is marked “38 S&W CTG”. The top of the barrel is marked “SMITH&WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS U.S.A.”. The right side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. Underneath the cylinder on the right side it is marked “MADE IN U.S.A.”.
The overall condition is excellent. The original blue finish is about 95%. The case colors are vibrant and near complete on the trigger. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The checkered walnut grips are fine. The bore is sharp and shiny. The action is excellent. You would be hard pressed to find a better example that letters from such an intriguing time and place in history!
