Smith & Wesson 38/44 Heavy Duty 5” Nickel with Mahogany Box
Description: The .38/44 was S&W’s initial answer to the .38 Super chambered in the famous Colt 1911A1. While revolvers were a national standard for use by police departments, many officers were finding that their .38 S&W and .38 Specials could not penetrate car bodies which was becoming a problem given the then escalating frequency of encounters between the police and gangsters and other outlaws. At the time of its introduction in 1929, the .38 Super was the only commercially available handgun cartridge that could reliably penetrate car doors (due to its muzzle velocity being higher than 1000 ft/s). The .38/44 moniker referred to the cartridge being a “38” (it was actually a .357” diameter bullet) caliber cartridge for use on a “44” frame, i.e. the N frame. Effectively, the .38/44 was a .38 Special loaded to a higher pressure. As the .38/44 round is identical in dimensions to the 38 Special, this created the problem wherein one could inadvertently use the .38/44 in a small frame 38 Special revolver such as the Chief’s Special with potentially dangerous results. By the early 1930s, S&W realized that their revolver sales were in jeopardy. As such, S&W introduced the .357 Magnum in 1935 in the .357 Registered Magnum Revolver (N frame). The .357 Magnum used a 0.125-inch longer case to prevent the round from being fired in a revolver chambered for the .38 Special. As such, any .357 Magnum revolver will also shoot the .38 Special. While the .357 Magnum took off like a rocket and revolvers chambered for it became best sellers, S&W continued to produce the .38/44 N frame revolvers for many years. The fixed sight version became known as the Heavy Duty while the adjustable sight version was sold under the name of The Outdoorsman. While both the Heavy Duty and The Outdoorsman made the transition to Model numbers 20 and 23 after 1957, very few of each was being produced at that point as the presence of the Model 27, a descendent of the Registered Magnum, made further production of the .38/44 revolvers uneconomical. As such, .38/44 revolvers which are actually stamped “Model 20” or “Model 23” are rare and are usually sold for large sums of money. This example is a .38/44 Heavy Duty Model of 1950, more commonly known as a “Pre-Model 20”. The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured between 1955 and 1956. It has the typical 5-inch barrel and .265” serrated service hammer. A 0.525” trigger shoe has been adapted to the original 0.265” combat trigger. Although it doesn’t appear to, there is indeed enough clearance between the trigger shoe and the inside of the trigger guard. The nickel finish remains in good or better condition. There are some light, surface-only scratches on the barrel and frame. There are powder burns on the front of the cylinder. The trigger and hammer retain most of their case hardened finish. The grips are in excellent shape with only minor handling wear. The bore is in mint condition and appears as though it left the factory yesterday. The action is consistent and smooth. Another, desirable aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. This revolver would make a good addition to any collection. It comes with a nice mahogany box which measures 16-1/4” long, 11-1/4” wide, and 2-7/8” tall.
