ALL ORIGINAL 2ND MODEL AMERICAN, 8” BARREL, #20XXX, FACTORY LETTER. S&W manufactured these early big bore cartridge guns from 1872-1874. During this time the Indian Wars and Frontier settlement was in a most violent full swing! The Colt Single Action Army had yet to make its debut on the civilian market when these guns were made and probably all of them went West. Interestingly, Wyatt Earp used one of these in the 20XXX range at the famed gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone, AZ. Outlaw Cole Younger also carried one. With such limited time of manufacture and that most went to the frontier, survival rates for these especially in original condition are small. The S&W historical letter confirms that this revolver was shipped on May 2, 1875 to S&W’s largest distributor M. W. Robinson of New York City. It is listed as having blue finish, smooth walnut grips and 8” barrel. This is a fairly late shipment date since serial numbers went into the 32,000 range and this one is well below that. Most likely the frames were all made from 1872-74 and guns were assembled and shipped for a few years after. This is a fine example with matching serial numbers on the frame (butt) and inside the original grips. As is correct for this early model, it has matching assembly numbers on the frame (under the right grip panel), cylinder, battel latch and barrel.
