Antique Smith & Wesson 2nd Model American. Some Original Finish. Crisp And Tight As New. Great Shooter....
Description: SOLD...Antique Smith & Wesson American 2nd Model. Nice example of the Smith & Wesson 2nd model American revolver. Has the standard 8” barrel. All matching assembly numbers with the S/N being 16047. These revolvers were made from 1872 to 1874. This model was very popular in the days with both out laws and lawmen carrying them throughout their careers. I don't think that these big frame Smiths get the attention that they deserve as everyone wants the famous"C-o-l-t SA" that was not available to the public for several years after these guns were being made.. This model was made to shoot the heeled base bullet .44 American caliber. Later in it's life someone has slightly reamed the cylinder chambers to fire the much more popular and accurate .44 Russian caliber. The bore diameters are the same so absolutely no problem with function or accuracy. Actually, the .44 Russian is much more accurate than the .44 American. I have had several of these that have been altered. The .44 Russian caliber was much more available in the later years 1880's to the 1890's and I suppose by what I have seen over the years, many of these have been altered in this way. This gun shoots great. Mechanics are all excellent and crisp and tight as a new gun. All functions of the extractor, hammer notches and barrel latch are perfect. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the latch and the hinge. NO cylinder front to rear movement and no side to side wobble.. Very tight gun. These are often found very worn out and loose and no ways near safe to shoot... Not the case with this one.. The right side of the gun has about 50% or more original nickel finish. The left side just has traces of nickel as you can see in the photos. Some light punch dots decoration ? on the cylinder...{see photos}.. A few spots of very minor pin prick roughness but nothing bad at all. Just shows honest wear and use... The case colors on the trigger guard and hammer have faded out.... No blue remaining on the barrel latch.. Still retains the original knurled extarctor trip on bottom of frame... These are often found broken and have been replaced.. The barrel address is all complete and very readable just showing normal wear. Original front sight never filed on or messed with. The grips are very good with the right side stamped inside with the gun's S/N and no number on the left side. They fit very well with no cracks and show honest wear with dings and scratches. The screw heads are not tool marked or burred up from tinkering.. Some do show some turning and some do not and all are very serviceable. The bore is very good with strong rifling and showing very light roughness. The cylinder chambers are very good also. This gun is very accurate with my correct cast bullet and black powder hand loads. The .44 Russian caliber was the winning caliber in revolver competition matches around the world for many years and is very well known for being the most accurate caliber on the frontier. I have several in my collection of New Model number 3 Smith & Wesson's and they all shoot better than any modern revolver I own. This is an affordable ole big frame Smith that shows some use but not abused with some finish remaining and very crisp and tight all around. You can't buy a refinished C-o-l-t parts gun for my asking price.. Enjoy a real piece of history here. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $25 insured shipping. Check back often as I will be listing many guns from my personal collection soon. SOLD Antique: Yes |
