EXCEEDINGLY RARE S&W FACTORY ENGRAVED "MEXICAN MODEL" .38 S&W CAL. REVOLVER WITH S&W FACTORY LETTER
Description: EXCEEDINGLY RARE FACTORY ENGRAVED "MEXICAN MODEL" .38 S&W CALIBER REVOLVER WITH S&W FACTORY LETTER! There were about 2,000 of these revolvers made from 1891-1911 and most were exported to Mexico, South America and Russia. They all fell in the serial number range of 1-28107 and were offered in different barrel lengths from 3 1/4" to 6". The distinguishing feature of these unusual revolvers is the flat-sided hammers with no safety notch and a spur trigger that was not built in to the frame. This 5" barrel example was sent for evaluation by old time famed gun dealer/collector William "Pete" Harvey of Falmouth, MA to S&W Historian Roy Jinks in early 1974. The letter on S&W stationery from Roy Jinks to Pete Harvey, dated February 4, 1974 states: We have received your .38 Single Action Mexican Model, serial number 10XXX. this handgun was shipped from the factory on December 12, 1901 and was purchased by Dr. Abernathy & Tifiton. My examination of the gun showed that the gun was equipped with the proper type of hammer and trigger which make up the Mexican configuration. The engraving on the revolver is factory however the records do not identify the gun as being shipped engraved. The handgun in question has replacement sights and grips and is fitted with a .38 Double Action barrel rather than the proper Model 91 barrel. However, the barrel is properly marked with the serial number and I believe that it is original with the handgun. The serial numbers match on the frame, cylinder and barrel. There is no number on the cylinder latch, which is fairly common on early guns. The latch has the attachment for a target rear sight blade which is no doubt what Mr. jinks was referring to in the letter. The engraving is a simple scroll on the frame sides and back strap top, on the cylinder, top strap and rear portion of the barrel. The metal is mostly a smooth uncleaned gray/brown with aged blue in the cylinder flutes and in the more protected areas. The action is good and functioning, and the bore is fine+ and should clean out about exc. All of this model are super rare and an engraved example is almost unheard of.
