Excellent Rare Antique Smith & Wesson 1st Model Double Action In .38 S&W Caliber.. Excellent mechanics. MFG 1880..Only 4000 Made.
Description:
SOLD...Excellent antique Smith & Wesson 1st Model double action in 38 S&W caliber with holster... Fairly rare and sought after as only about 4,000 of this model made and all made in 1880. This one is S/N 1873. All matching S/N of course.. This gun has quite a bit of original nickel finish.. The barrel has about 75% just thinning out a little on the left side as you can see in the photos. The cylinder has at least 95% bright nickel remaining and the frame has 98% ..including the front and rear grip straps. The barrel latch still has about 50% bright blue..The hammer has most all the bright and vivid case colors on the right side and on the rear of the hammer. The trigger has very good traces of case colors on the sides.. The trigger guard just has traces of bright blue up next to the frame where protected. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun.. Single action holds perfectly as well as perfectly working double action.. Both hammer safety notch and full cock notch are correct. The gun locks up like new with no cylinder movement front to rear or side to side. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the latch and the hinge.. No movement anywhere. The screw heads are all sharp and clean and not burred up from tinkering. The markings are excellent.. The grips are excellent showing a little wear to the checkering but no cracks or chips and a perfect snap on factory fit. The bore is very good showing strong rifling and a few small spots or roughness from black powder but no big pits, rings or bulges. The cylinder chambers are mint, bright and shiny with no roughness.. Just a very nice little Smith easily rating NRA excellent with at least over 80% original over all finish. Not much else to say about this one. My description and photos should tell the story.. Hard to find these 1st models in such great condition being made in 1880 !!!! The holster in one of the photos is included with the sale.. Later made about 1920 or so I would guess.. Gun fits in it very well but has some loose stitching at the trigger guard.. No other rips or tears.. I have no use for it and can't remember how I got it or what it came with.. I can send more better photos of it.. That photo was actually taken by accident.. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos.. $15 insured priority mail..
