Rare Revenue Cutter Service Smith & Wesson,,, . Serial # 23893 was shipped June 27, 1890 to the United States Government, National Armory, Springfield MA. for the Revenue Cutter Service... Serial number 23893 is also recorded in the Supica and Nahas' book "STANDARD CATALOG OF SMITH & WESSON" (page 106) as being shipped to the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service.. Comes with a factory letter.
The Revenue Cutter Service purchased approximately 140 Smith & Wesson New Model. 3's.,, between 1890 and 1894. Twelve revolvers were issued to each Revenue Cutter Ship. The serial number "23893" is located on the revolver butt, the inside of the barrel latch and on the rear face of the barrel. The rear face of the cylinder is numbered "26194". Both Serial Numbers were shipped to the Revenue Cutter Service on June 27, 1890.
The cylinder was probably "switched during cleaning" or maintenance by a Ship's Armorer, and such was often the case.
The revolver retains 30% original blue finish with the balance a mottled brown-gray patina. Some mild pitting is present with the right side of the frame having a series of scratches. The hammer retains traces of original case colors. The well worn grips are good. Mechanically excellent. $4,450.
