Smith & Wesson 1st Model Double Action .44 S&W Russian
Description: This is a currently non-functional example of the first large-caliber S&W double-action revolver. Currently, the cylinder does not rotate properly. The likely culprit is a weak spring. The side plate screw is buggered so care must be taken when removing it. The barrel appears to have originally been longer. The bore exhibits some notable pitting but the rifling is still mostly intact. There is some pitting in one spot on the cylinder and a smaller one at the muzzle on the left-hand side of the barrel. Some very minor pitting is located on the frame in a few places. The gun appears to have been refinished at some point. It is entirely possible that the gun has simply been re-nickeled as opposed to an original blued gun being nickel-plated as many S&W revolvers were originally nickel plated at the factory in those days. Nickel in many ways was to guns in those days what stainless steel is to today’s firearms. It offered greater resistance to rust than bluing and far greater resistance to the elements than color case hardening. The S&W 44 DA 1st model was very popular in the Old West for obvious reasons. It was more mechanically reliable than the Colt Lightning/Thunderer and Alaskan revolvers that came before it and it far faster to reload than its competitors which still relied on the old loading gate method. The only drawback was that the top-break nature of the design at that time required the DA to stick to shorter cartridges while the Colt 1878 Alaskan was chambered in the legendary .45 Colt. Not to say that the .44 Russian is a weak cartridge, but it was more famous as a target round than a man-stopper. Even so, the 44 DA was popular with many and sold 71,000 revolvers in four variations between 1881 and 1913.
