Smith & Wesson .44 Transitional American
Description: Smith & Wesson Model 3 American Transition Model. This is a really hard variation to find and quite scarce. Transition Model serial number ranges are from approximately 6800-8000. Transition models are distinguished by a shorter, 1.423-inch, cylinder and a notch in the hammer for the interlocking barrel catch. This revolver has an 8-inch barrel and smooth ivory grips The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "+ SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. JULY 10. 60. JAN.17. FEB. 17. JULY 11. 65 & AUG. 24. 69 +" in one line with Maltese crosses at either end. The serial number, "6860" is stamped on the butt, rear face of the cylinder and on the rear of the frame. All of the visible serial numbers match. The First Model American revolvers were the first S&W top-break revolvers and pre-dated the Colt Single Action by nearly three years. First Model American revolvers are known to have been carried by William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody and other famous western figures. Condition is fine The cylinder and the barrel are turning a pleasing plumb color while the frame retains 90% of the original high polish blue finish. The hammer and trigger guard show strong case colors fading to a pleasing grey. The ivory grips are in excellent condition with no cracks or chipsand have turned a beautiful butter color. The action functions perfectly and the bore is bright. This is a scarce Smith & Wesson Transition First Model American revolver. SOLD Antique: Yes |
