SMITH & WESSON NEW MODEL No. 3, .44 RUS., NON-STANDARD 6” BARREL, ALL MATCHING NUMBER 21XXX
Description: NEW MODEL No. 3, .44 RUSSIAN CALIBER WITH NON-STANDARD 6” BARREL, WITH ALL MATCHING SERIAL NUMBER 21XXX. Considered one of the finest revolvers of the black powder era, the New Model No.3 held most of the records for target shooting at the time. It was S&Ws last big bore top break single action revolver. The standard barrel length for this model was 6 ½” and although it was made on special order in other lengths, any length other than 6 ½” is rare. This example is nickel plated with excellent grips that fit perfectly, screws, mechanics and excellent bore. On this one it is hard to tell were the nickel is flaked or worn off and the bare metal remains as the metal is fairly bright. The metal may have been lightly polished at some time or it just naturally remained un-dulled after some nickel peeled. Either way, the outside appearance is very attractive. Some revolvers have the metal turn very dark where the nickel finish peels or wears off which leaves a splotchy, unattractive appearance. There is still good nickel on much of the cylinder, barrel top (with correct patent dates and address markings), on the bottom of the frame in front of the trigger guard etc. The front sight has not been altered and all serial numbers match on the frame, cylinder, barrel latch and barrel. An attractive example with rare barrel length. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: SMITH & WESSON Model: New Model No. 3 Serial Number: 21XXX Barrel Length: RARE 6 Condition: FINE Bore Condition: EXC. |
