The Smith & Wesson Model 49 is one of the classic concealed-carry revolvers ever produced. Built on the compact J-frame, its distinctive Bodyguard design encloses most of the hammer while still allowing single-action fire when desired. This example retains the traditional blued finish and factory-style walnut Magna stocks that collectors associate with early production revolvers.

Chambered in .38 Special, the Model 49 offers dependable performance in a compact package. The fixed sights are regulated for defensive use, while the shrouded hammer minimizes snagging when drawn from a pocket or holster. The steel construction also provides a comfortable balance that helps tame recoil compared to lightweight alloy-frame revolvers.

The rounded J-frame fits naturally in the hand, and the smooth service trigger supports consistent double-action shooting. The traditional cylinder release and compact grip profile make the revolver fast to manipulate while maintaining excellent concealability. The original wood stocks provide both classic appearance and secure handling.

Smith & Wesson designed the Bodyguard series for shooters who wanted the reliability of a revolver with improved draw characteristics. The enclosed hammer profile significantly reduces the chance of snagging on clothing while preserving the option of deliberate single-action fire. This configuration became one of the company's most respected defensive revolver designs.
