Smith & Wesson Model 58 41 Magnum S.F.P.D. Marked 4” w/Box
Description: The Model 58 was introduced in July of 1964 as a Military & Police counterpart to the Model 57 Target revolver, just as the Model 28 filled the M&P role for the Model 27. In other words, the Model 58 is a utilitarian version of the Model 57. The difference in this case however, is that while the Model 28 and 27 both had adjustable sights, the Model 58 has fixed sights while the 57 uses the same adjustable sights as the 27. The fixed sights on the 58 is a feature found on older S&W revolvers, especially the other revolvers in the M&P line such as the M&P 38/Model 10 in 38 Special and the Model 1917 in .45 ACP. The Model 58 uses the traditional square-butt N frame and features a blued finish. Other features included are a 4-inch pinned barrel with non-shrouded ejector rod, .500-inch serrated target trigger, .500-inch target hammer, 1/8-inch serrated ramp front sight, and square notch rear sight. The cylinder is counterbored which was common on S&W revolvers at the time. The serrated backstrap and front strap have 10 grooves. The grips are Goncalo Alves checkered target stocks with extractor relief cut on the left hand grip. It should be noted that the trigger, hammer and grips are unusual for the Model 58. Normally, this model was fitted with .265” serrated service hammer and trigger and the smaller Magna stocks. The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured between 1965 and 1966. It has the anacronym S.F.P.D. engraved on the left had side of the frame, with the “D” almost under the grip. This could only stand for San Francisco Police Department, which according to the Standard Catalogue, was actually shipped Model 58 revolvers. This Model 58 is used, but its condition indicates the revolver was fired infrequently. There are barely any powder burns on the front of the cylinder. The bore is in mint condition and appears as though it left the factory yesterday, which will contribute to extreme accuracy. The revolver was clearly carried on a regular basis, exhibiting the usual holster wear on the muzzle, cylinder, and bottom of the trigger guard. The backstrap also has light finish wear. The cylinder has some light scratches around its surface which can be seen in the pictures. Overall, condition is very good for a firearm originally issued to police. One desirable aspect of this revolver is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a sought-after feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. This Model 58 would be an excellent addition to any S&W owner’s collection.
