Smith & Wesson Model 13-1 .357 Magnum 4” Excellent Cond.
Description: The Model 13 was introduced in 1974 as a successor to the popular Model 10-6, a special version of the Model 10 chambered for the .357 Magnum rather than the usual .38 Special. Thus, despite the lower number, the “13” arrived on the scene much later than its adjustable sights counterpart, the Model 19. That model first left the factory in 1955 under the name Combat Magnum, and was renamed as the Model 19 in 1957. Normally, as far as older Smith & Wesson models are concerned, a fixed sight version is usually released first with the adjustable sight version coming thereafter. Even the original Model 10-6 was only introduced in 1962, seven years after the Combat Magnum. The Model 13 was a popular issue sidearm with the F.B.I. in 1974 and 1986-87. The 13 was produced with a 3-inch pinned barrel and a round butt, or a 4-inch pinned heavy barrel and a square butt. This 13-1 features the 4-inch pinned heavy barrel, square butt grips, .265-inch grooved service trigger, and a .265-inch combat hammer. The Model 13 was, like the Model 19, designed to allow law enforcement to practice with the handgun using the 38 Special and carry it with the 357 Magnum in a handgun lighter than the larger N-frame Model 27. Although not as popular as the Model 19, the Model 13 was still popular enough to be in production from 1974 to 1999 – a successful run by any standard. The 13-1 shown here is in good if lightly worn condition. The barrel, frame, and cylinder all exhibit minor spots of pitting, although the spots on the latter are easy to miss. The most notable area of finish wear would be the front of the yoke (aka the “crane”). Otherwise, the revolver retains 90 to 95 percent of the original bluing. The grips exhibit very little wear. The bore however looks to be in excellent condition. The 13’s serial number indicates year of production as 1977. It would be an excellent home defense gun or a nice addition to the collection of a Smith & Wesson enthusiast.
