Smith & Wesson Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman 4” Copperas Cove Police Department
Description: The Model 28 was introduced in 1954 as a less expensive alternative for Law Enforcement Departments who wanted the firepower of the Model 27 in their hands but who did not exactly have the budget to afford that relatively expensive model. Thus, the Model 28 was essentially a utilitarian version of the Model 27. The Model 28 features a satin blue finish rather than a high polish one and is the only N-frame revolver with an adjustable rear sight leaf that is non-serrated as well as no serrations on the barrel rib, sharing this feature with the Model 56. Other features included are a 4-inch half-lug barrel, square butt frame, .265-inch serrated target trigger, .400-inch semi-target hammer, plain ramp front sight, and recessed chambers in the cylinder. The serrated backstrap and front strap have 10 grooves. The grips are traditional checkered wood. Smith & Wesson refers to these as “Magna stocks.” The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured between 1969 and 1970. In civilian circles, the Model 28 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting (including bullseye, PPC, and IHMSA matches). As mentioned previously, it has also been used by law enforcement. Departments which used the Model 28 include the Florida Highway Patrol (25 guns, 5-inch barrels, nickel finish, very rare), the Washington State Patrol, the New York State Police, and the Texas Dept. of Public Safety. This Model 28 was apparently used by the Copperas Cove Police Department in Texas. Sadly, they marked this on the gun with a stencil rather than stamping it like most other departments did. There is also a letter “R” marked in the frame about a 0.5” to the right of the “Copperas Cove PD”. There are only light powder burns on the front of the cylinder. There are a few spots of micro-pitting, but these are very small. The frame and barrel do exhibit holster wear. The side plate has light finish wear as well. There is a small area of micro-dings on one edge of the cylinder. The left blade of the rear sight is dinged though the rear sight can still be used. Fortunately, new rear sights are not hard to find for Smith & Wesson revolvers. The bore is in mint condition and appears as though it left the factory yesterday, which will contribute to extreme accuracy. Another, desirable aspect of this revolver is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature.
