Smith & Wesson Model 29-3 44 Mag Blued 3” Barrel Made 1985
Description: The Model 29 is perhaps one of Smith & Wesson’s most widely known models. It was intended to allow the shooter to carry a revolver which possessed far better knockdown power than any 357 Magnum chambered revolver. The example shown here is a rare variation of the “Dash-3” sub-model. The Dash-3 was the first variation of the 29 to feature a non-pinned barrel. This Dash-3 features a short 3” barrel with an almost full underlug (more like a 7/8 lug). Other features of this revolver include a round butt frame, S&W combat grips with smooth finger grooves, a .400-inch checked target hammer, .312-inch smooth target trigger, ramp front sight, and a white outline on the rear sight blade. The original front sight insert, normally orange in color, has been replaced by a green one. The serrated backstrap has 10 grooves. The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured in 1985. The Model 29 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement, although never on an “as issue” basis. The .44 Magnum is a powerful cartridge, and many appreciate it for its firepower to this day. It has been used effectively for defense against dangerous animals, particularly the grizzly. It has even been used to disable a moving vehicle by putting a round through the car’s engine block on more than one occasion. This revolver is pre-owned, but the lack of powder residue in the bore or on the face of the cylinder suggests it has not been fired since leaving the factory. The bluing is in roughly 98 percent shape. There is a spot of loss around the letter “A” in “.44 Magnum” on the right-hand side of the barrel (picture 13). The frame has a few spots, one on the left-hand side below the cylinder (picture 4), with two small spots on the front lower corner of the frame (picture 14). The cylinder has one spot of finish were, similar to the barrel (picture 5). There are a few, barely visible series of scratches over one or two of the chambers (picture 12), with a singular scratch over another chamber (picture 5). Even that one is hard to see unless the revolver is held in the light at a certain angle. The finish on the grips is worn on the lower front edge (pictures 9 and 10). Otherwise, the pistol has been well-cared for. As mentioned, the bore is extremely clean and exhibits virtually no wear (picture 15). An important aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers, and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. Sadly, the original box is not present. Even so, this revolver is in excellent condition and would be a nice addition to any S&W owner’s collection.
