The 657 was intended to allow the shooter to have a revolver that had far better resistance to rust and wear than the original carbon-steel Model 57, much like the 629 is to the Model 29. This is an early “No Dash” variation. According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition it was made in 1986 and has the Product Code 103951. Features normally included are a 3-inch barrel, round butt, adjustable sights, .312-inch smooth combat trigger, and a .375-inch combat hammer. This one of course has been customized. The barrel has been Magna-ported. Instead of the original target stocks, this 657 comes with a set of Crimson Trace laser grips. The original rear sight has been replaced by a picatinny mount and an Nc Star red dot sight. The original is present and stored in the box. The Model 657, like the 629, has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement, although never on an “as issue” basis. This one is in good shape but has seen some use. The cylinder face has some powder burns although the bore is fairly clean. There are minor wear marks in the finish on the barrel, cylinder, and frame. None of these are deep but some can be felt with a bare fingertip. There is a nick in the cylinder over one chamber. The front face of the red dot sight’s lens is chipped on the right side when looking down the sight but it does affect sighting; please see the pictures. The box that comes with this revolver is not the original box but it is one of the modern Smith & Wesson hard cases. One noteworthy aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock.
